L.A. Automakers to Design Something Green

The Los Angeles auto show is challenging the design departments of the major automakers to pen something green. And to take on the challenge are nine automakers who will design a vehicle that will be able to meet the environmental challenges that comes with living in L.A.

The winner is to be announced at the upcoming L.A. auto show which will be held in late November. The nine entrants are as follows:

1. 2006 Acura FCX 2020 Le Mans Concept - utilizes molecular nanotechnology which means a compact fuel cell. Materials used for this concept car are 100 percent recyclable.

2. 2006 Audi Dynamic Space Frame Concept - aerodynamic and stealth-like speedster. Its dynamic space frame integrates all fluid and electrical channels. A hydraulic fluid drive is place instead of the traditional driveshaft and suspension/body components.

3. 2006 Honda Extreme Concept - sporty two-passenger vehicle that features a pod-like cabin, consisting of a honeycomb chassis that is made from polycarbonate.

4. 2006 Hummer 02 Concept - with rugged capability and construction methods that promotes safety, accessibility and post consumer reuse. Powered by a fuel cell and breathes through a revolutionary phototropic body shell that produces pure oxygen throughout.

5. 2006 2015 Kia Sandstorm Concept - it's a bio-diesel electric plug-in hybrid with a fully recyclable battery. It has a solar-powered cooling feature and built-in detachable recycling bins.

6. 2006 Mercedes Benz RECY Concept - a combination of wood, alloy, glass and rubber creates an ultimate recyclable roadster of the future. This coupe is powered by a four-cylinder Blu-Tec bio-diesel motor. The RECY's open air design is perfect for enjoying LA weather and lifestyle.

7. 2006 Mini BioMoke Concept - its body is constructed from a single sheet of biodegradable sandwich paneling impregnated with palm trees seed. As it ends it five-year lifecycle its body composts to give way to tree growth and clean air.

8. 2006 Toyota RLV Concept - it has a lightweight, aluminum body, two –seat tandem vehicle featuring an innovative collapsible track system. It also makes use of a manual/pedal that may be used for heavy, stop-n-go traffic.

9. 2006 Volkswagen Nanospyder Concept - makes use of nanotechnology creating a vehicle that is capable of being assembled, disassembled and reassembled.
